I'm not going to tell the readers of our forum that this is an excellent movie. Yes, it's sentimental. Yes, the way the black artist dying of Aids is shown is a doubtful matter. Yes, the elder sister is somewhat too premature. Yet the film has some good sides as well: first and foremost its fabulous actors and actresses, especially the two girls. Secondly the atmosphere of the tumbledown house in the middle of roaring Manhattan is created very convincingly. And so, in spite of its apparent flaws, the movie isn't just a waste of time and money, as you see it. All right, it is certainly not the great achievement of the year 2003, but it's well worth watching. To me, however, "My left foot" remains Jim Sheridan's best film.

Das einzige wirkliche Highlight in diesem Film sind die beiden großartig spielenden Mädchen. Ansonsten hat dieser Film nichts, was irgendwie überzeugt oder hängen bleibt, sondern kommt für meinen Geschmack in einigen Szenen viel zu bedeutungsschwanger und dadurch irgendwie ziemlich platt daher.

Low-Budget-Streifen

Ein enttäuschender Low-Budget-Streifen, dem es nicht nur am Geld sondern auch an Inspiration, Witz, Spannung und einem guten Drehbuch mangelt. Lieblos heruntergedreht und für mich nur ca. 40 Min. zu ertragen. Nach dem Kirmes-Desaster des unreifen Familienvaters haben wir schleunigst das Kino verlassen und unseren Frust mit einem guten Glas Bier hinunter zu spülen versucht. Tip: Besser gleich in die Kneipe gehen als sich auf so einen Streifen einzulassen!

this movie is one of the absolute WORST movies i have ever seen. i saw it a couple of weeks ago in madrid and felt like throwing up!!! this is a movie made with oscars in mind! an irish family emigrate to the usa illegally - end up living in a tenement in harlem full of junkies - but their experience of the usa is amazing. everyone is NICE. everyone is helpful! and life is just fun, fun, fun!!! this is totally sickmaking!!! and worse....sheridan has the gall to introduce the black artist dying of ?AIDS....like some sort of tokenism to black, gays, etc. AVOID THIS MOVIE AT ALL COST!!!! IT IS A WASTE OF YOUR TIME AND MONEY. there are certainly movies to be made on the recent irish experiences in the usa, but this is not it. and as for movies on AIDS...check out Parting Glances instead!!! more fun and better informed.
